Wayne Coyne cover for Dallas Observer

JAMES - I had the extreme pleasure of being asked to illustrate a cover for the Dallas Observer featuring the one-and-only Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. The issue is out on the streets now - and if you're not in Dallas, I highly suggest reading the interview online here (and there's also a great photo-story about the record pressing plant Wayne uses - see it here).

Working with Art Director Alex Flores was way awesome - he consistently has some of the best 'weekly' covers in the country (proof here - total quality every week), and he really brought some great stuff outta me. At his request, I chronicled my creation process of the cover as best I could. Following are some photos of how it all came about:

Anyone curious of the finer details: The ink drawing was done on this really nice Drafting Film (.003 thickness), using a Winsor & Newton Series 7 #2 brush and Dr. Ph Martin's Black Star Ink. Digital work was done using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Thanks for reading!

Looks great man! I really love it, thanks for the process pics :-). Did the mag do the Copy? It looks like they used a mod of the starwars font, which goes great with your piece!

Thanks! Yeah, the magazine did the text layout on the cover (except the logo on top, which I fit into the illo). Glad you dig!
