OH MY!

TOM- Here's another boxing drawing. I'm just really into boxing as a theme for most of the art that i have been working on in the past few months, we'll see where it goes, maybe i can collect them and make a book, who knows. This one was done for the same class as the previous post. I was in a complete rush and had to do it all the night before. I started at about 8 and ended around 2. Its kind of nice completing a drawing in one sitting, 'cause it's something i rarely do. This one could have totally been better if i had spent more time on it and maybe gave it an extra day, but i like the fact that i didn't second guess too much, but just went with it instead. I do want to use this to experiement with color on. More boxing drawings on the way! ( whether you like it or not.) Peace.

Promo Piece!


TOM- The assignment for one of my classes is to create two illustrations that can be used as promo pieces. The idea was to draw whatever you like, just as long as it is a true representation of the kind of work you would like to be hired to do. I thought about it, and came to the conclusion that i really like to draw hot chicks. So, i started sketching and came up with this quick sketch, a chick painting tattoo's on herself. Cool idea, i thought. I showed it to my instructor and she quickly informed me that there was absolutely no concept behind it! She encouraged me to rethink it and perhaps add some background that would push the idea a little further.



I liked the whole tattooing idea and wanted to keep the pose, so i just put her in an environment that made a little more sense. Now she's at a construction site using the paint that's already there and putting on a show for the guys. Like i said in a previous post, I've been looking at alot of pin-up art lately and been loving how ridiculous and silly alot of there concepts are, yet it's there execution and attention to detail that makes it all.
I inked it. I made the guys in the background a little bigger than in the pencils and added more detail to the room.
And here's the color! I spent close to eleven hours coloring this today. I really tried to take my time and play with warm and cool colors as well as add some fancy touches to it. I would talk more about it, but I'm ready to pass out, it's almost 2 in the morning and i have to get up for work in the morning...Lt me know what you think (anybody?) Should i send this out as a promo piece? Peace Out.

TOM- I just think this photo is extremly funny.

SILKSCREEN

TOM- Here's a silkscreen print I did the other day. I'm working on an accordion book for my class( which i will post as soon as it's done) and when I was printing the cover, i had more room left on my screen so i took this drawing that i did in my sketchbook and burned it on to the screen. I was using a gold ink for my cover and figured i would just use the rest on this image. It turned out kind of subtle looking against the white paper which i kinda like. I did another separation for it which acts as a lighting effect but didn't have the time to print it just yet. So it's kind of a work in progress but i figured I'd share it. Peace Out!

Master Slave

JAMES - Mike Sniper, an incredible illustrator (myspace and gigposter links), is publishing a magazine/program for the power-pop festival he's running in Brooklyn in March. he offered me an ad for Electric Frog, which was real cool of him. so i wanted to do something striking and simple, and now that i think about it, i could totally use this as a sticker of flyer, too.
no real reference this time, but my imagination was sparked by an image in a great book i just got called The Poster In History by Max Gallo. after a quick marker sketch in the ol' sketchbook, i put pencil to paper. working in a 8.5" x 11" space with about a 3/8" boarder - the image will be printed at 50% (4.25"x5.5"). once again, no lightbox - i didn't really need it, plus i didn't want to dwell on this too much. today i hit it with some ink - 'black star' ink; #3 brush for the hands, teeth, hair and eyes; #6 brush to fill in the big spots; #.03 & #1 micron pens for the letterwork and mixing board detail; and a little bit of white FW ink to tighten up the white letters on the mixer. my only concern is the amount of text below the image and how it will transfer when it's reduced. i really couldn't have made it any less wordy, but maybe could've cropped the image more to make space for the words.

JAMES - so now that we're about 85% settled here in Hendersonville, NC, Tom asked that i send some pics of the room i turned into an art studio. and besides the pic up top, here's a link to a quick panoramic video of the room.

as you can see, everything is spaced nicely, there's tons of light, and i got big fat speakers in my face to keep me rockin' (or yelling at Mike & the Maddog, which i can still hear online. Mike is such a prick). and Tom, there's plenty of space for you to draw in here too when you visit. and not only that, but there's a bathroom in the room, to the left of the computer - so i never have to leave this place!

COMICS!

TOM- Here's a comic I did a few months ago. Alot of times when i make comics, i get super intimidated by the idea of committing to a story, keeping the artwork consistent, and keeping myself interested. My former instructor, Jessica Abel got me into the idea of doing sketch book comics. There fun for me because i can get my ideas down, say whatever i want and technically nobody ever has to see them, so the pressure is off. And just like any kind of sketch, if you like it and see something interesting in it, you could always take it further and make it a more refined piece. This was sort of a 'stream of consciousness' kind of exercise that i did just to get the ideas flowing, in other words, i had no idea what to write about. What i do with most of these kinds of comics is draw whatever comes to my mind in the first panel with no idea of a story at all and then just take it from there. It's kind of like doing a 'jam comic', but with yourself. The story itself doesn't really make any sense at all but I find that one of the things sketch book comics are useful for is keeping me familiar with the format of comics, trying to find interesting things to do inside those tiny little boxes can sometimes be the hardest thing to do and often drives me crazy.
